IBS: Food, Daily Habits and Comfortable Movement

Understand symptom patterns, food experiments and movement without turning every meal into a list of restrictions.

THE ESSENTIALS

  • Get persistent symptoms assessed before calling them IBS.
  • Trial one practical change at a time.
  • Use a dietitian for restrictive diets and reintroduction.

Start with a diagnosis, not a food ban

Irritable bowel syndrome can involve abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea or a changing combination. Symptoms may come and go, and a food that causes trouble on one occasion may be tolerated on another. This makes IBS frustrating, but it does not mean that every symptom is caused by something you ate.

Persistent bowel changes deserve an assessment. IBS is not the same condition as inflammatory bowel disease, and an online symptom list cannot distinguish it from other causes. Bring a short history of when symptoms began, how often they occur and whether they interrupt sleep or daily activities.

Make food experiments small and useful

Rather than remove dairy, wheat, pulses, fruit and spices together, note meals alongside symptoms and bowel habits. A simple record can help you and a dietitian identify a plausible pattern. It is a conversation aid, not proof of an intolerance. Changing several things at once makes the result difficult to interpret.

Different kinds of fibre can behave differently. Your clinician may suggest increasing soluble fibre gradually, particularly when constipation is a problem. A sudden large increase may worsen gas. A low-FODMAP approach is another option for selected people, ideally with a trained dietitian and a plan to reintroduce foods. It is not intended to become an unnecessarily restrictive lifelong diet.

Movement should fit your day

A manageable routine is more useful than a punishing workout followed by days of avoidance. Try a comfortable walk on a familiar route with convenient toilet access. Keep a note of whether meal timing, workout intensity or anxiety seems to affect symptoms. Do not interpret a difficult day as evidence that all exercise is harmful.

On a flare day, it is reasonable to simplify the session and focus on comfortable movement. Avoid using exercise to compensate for eating, and avoid beginning a new supplement and a new training plan at the same time. Discuss persistent exercise-related symptoms with your clinician.

Treat the whole pattern

IBS treatment may combine food changes, symptom-specific medicines and psychological therapies. Gut-directed approaches or cognitive behavioural therapy can help some people; their use does not imply that symptoms are imaginary. Sleep disruption, stress and fear of symptoms are worth discussing alongside bowel habits.

For your next appointment, choose one concrete goal: fewer urgent trips during your commute, less bloating after lunch, or more confidence going for a walk. Ask what improvement would count as a successful trial, how long to try it and what to do if symptoms change.

KNOW WHEN TO GET HELP

When self-care isn’t enough

  • Seek urgent assessment for rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss or a new abdominal lump.
  • Severe sudden abdominal pain, fainting or significant bleeding needs emergency care.

For a medical emergency, contact local emergency services immediately. Do not wait for an online response.
