THE ESSENTIALS

  • Breathing pauses and daytime sleepiness deserve assessment.
  • A sleep study provides information that snoring alone cannot.
  • Ask for help with treatment fit and comfort.

Look beyond the volume of snoring

Loud snoring together with pauses in breathing, choking or gasping during sleep can suggest sleep apnoea. Daytime sleepiness, morning headaches and poor concentration are other reasons to seek assessment. Snoring alone does not establish the diagnosis, and a quiet night does not exclude a problem.

If someone shares your room, ask what they have noticed. Write down whether sleepiness affects work, conversations or travel. Do not drive or operate dangerous equipment when sleepy; practical safety matters while you are waiting for an appointment.

Understand what testing adds

A clinician will ask about symptoms, medicines, health history and possible risk factors. A sleep study can establish the type of sleep apnoea and its severity. Testing may happen at home or in a sleep service, depending on the situation and local arrangements.

A simple diary of bedtime, waking time and daytime sleepiness can help explain your experience. It is not a substitute for a sleep study. Bring your questions to the consultation: what will the test measure, how will results be explained, and what happens if the first test does not answer the question?

Match treatment to the diagnosis

Positive airway pressure treatment, often CPAP, uses airflow to keep the airway open during sleep. Some people may be offered a suitable oral device or other treatment. The choice depends on the diagnosis, severity and individual circumstances; a generic anti-snoring purchase is not equivalent to a prescribed treatment.

Regular activity, appropriate weight management, limiting alcohol and stopping smoking may be part of care. Sleeping on your side may help some people. These measures can accompany treatment rather than replace it. If a prescribed device is uncomfortable, ask the sleep service about fit and troubleshooting instead of silently abandoning it.

KNOW WHEN TO GET HELP

When self-care isn’t enough

  • Do not drive or use dangerous machinery when excessively sleepy.
  • Arrange medical assessment for observed breathing pauses or repeated choking during sleep.

For a medical emergency, contact local emergency services immediately. Do not wait for an online response.
